EGPAF Congratulates Deborah Birx on her Nomination as U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation CEO Charles Lyons offers his congratulations to Deborah Birx, MD on her nomination as U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator:

“EGPAF welcomes the nomination of Deborah Birx, M.D. as the new U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator. Dr. Birx will lead the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator as it develops sustainable solutions to global health challenges, including efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS.

“Dr. Birx has been on the frontline of the fight against HIV/AIDS for nearly 30 years, offering her leadership and technical assistance to make a tremendous public health impact, including her strong support of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) which she will now lead. Her advocacy for the growth and scale-up PEPFAR’s programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV has been invaluable – today PEPFAR has averted more than 1 million pediatric HIV infections. Her vast experience, including her most recent position as director of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Division of Global HIV/AIDS, makes her well-suited to take on this new role.

“Dr. Birx has been a long-time friend and ally of EGPAF and I look forward to working with her more as we continue our mission to achieve an AIDS-free generation.”
