Don’t Wait, Eliminate
You are here
Elimination of vertical transmission (EVT) has been a cornerstone of EGPAF’s work for years and an essential part of our mission. Innovations in treatment and testing make preventing mother-to-child transmission easier than ever, but some mothers still do not have access to these breakthroughs.
We are calling on leaders across Africa to stop waiting and put EVT on the agenda. Together we can eliminate vertical transmission of HIV!
What is Vertical Transmission
Over 90% of new childhood HIV infections in the world today are a result of transmission between mother and child, commonly known as vertical transmission. Mothers living with HIV can transmit the virus to their children during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.
However, there are now tools available to help mothers living with HIV have HIV-free children. Thanks to HIV testing, lifelong ART, PrEP, safe childbirth, and postnatal care women around the world are welcoming healthy babies.
In 2023, 120,000 children acquired HIV. Effective interventions before, during, and after pregnancy, could have prevented these infections but only if EVT is prioritized.
