Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Supports Designation of Monkeypox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern

Fighting for an AIDS-free generation means fighting more than one pandemic at a time. If the global health community has learned anything from both its response to the HIV and COVID-19 pandemics, it is that quick and decisive action must be taken to curb new infections before they grow out of control. On July 23, 2022, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, “decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.” Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) supports this decision.

EGPAF closely monitors the evolving outbreak of monkeypox and the impact on all of the communities we serve through our programs. “We will continue to address the health and well-being of children, youth, families and communities in our response to the monkeypox outbreak, just as we have done in the fight against HIV for more than 30 years,” said EGPAF CEO and President, Chip Lyons. “By leveraging our expertise in technical assistance, research, and innovation, EGPAF will strengthen health systems globally and continue advocating for children, youth, and families in the fight for both a generation free from HIV and monkeypox alike.”
