Enabling Differentiated and Patient-Centric Care Using True Point-of-Care Diagnostics
Date: Sunday, 21 July, 2019 | 10:15-12:15
Host: Abbott

Location: Casa del Diezmo 3 y 4

Summary: Tens of millions of lives have been saved over the past decade through HIV prevention, care and treatment programs. However, as we continue to expand ART coverage to unprecedented levels, caring for those on treatment and identifying unserved persons living with HIV poses a unique set of challenges. Even today in the face of overwhelming evidence on the value of true POC diagnostic and monitoring tools, we still experience underutilization of these live saving technologies. To reach universal access and truly achieve epidemic control, service delivery models need to evolve to deploy critical innovations and play a more central role in health care network optimization. In this symposium we will hear from global experts, including EGPAF’s Chip Lyons, in patient access needs and innovations in EID, viral load monitoring, and mobile service delivery models that are making an impact today.

Saving Lives Today: Accelerating Access to Diagnostics and Therapeutics for Advanced Disease

Date: Monday 22 July, 18:30 - 20:30
Host: CHAI, Unitaid

Location: Palacio de Iturbide 3 (food and drinks will be served)

Summary: In sub-Saharan Africa, more than ⅓ of patients initiating ART have advanced HIV disease (AHD) and approximately 10% die within the first 3 months of enrolment. Updated WHO guidelines on managing AHD and new donor investment, including a recently announced AHD initiative by Unitaid, are catalyzing efforts to accelerate access to AHD products that will save lives. This session focuses on the opportunity to reduce AIDS-related mortality through investment in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of opportunistic infections (OIs) in resource-limited settings. The session will highlight the clinical and programmatic implications of optimizing AHD diagnosis and treatment, interventions to overcome market shortcomings, and implementation practicalities drawing on experiences from early adopter countries. This session, co-paneled by EGPAF Sr. Director of Innovations, Jennifer Cohn, will provide rapid feedback to inform countries’ future AHD strategies in order to accelerate access to simpler, safer, and more affordable AHD commodities.
