Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Names New President

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), a proven leader in the global fight for an AIDS-free generation and a founding partner of HealthX Partners, announced today that its board of directors has named Dr. Doris Macharia EGPAF’s new president. Dr. Macharia succeeds Charles “Chip” Lyons, who retired from EGPAF on Feb. 7th after 15 years in the role, on March 10th.

The selection of Dr. Macharia caps an extensive, international search process facilitated by Oxford HR, a global executive leadership consultancy supporting remarkable leaders in social and environmental impact organizations. An internal EGPAF search committee narrowed the initial prospect pool to a group who interviewed with the board’s succession committee and then to a final round who met with board leadership.

“Dr. Macharia brings fresh ideas, deep leadership experience, and a profound commitment to improving the health of children, families, and communities,” said Dr. Shannon Hader, Board Chair for EGPAF.  “She brings positive energy to EGPAF as we confront unprecedented challenges and uncertainties in the fight against HIV and AIDS at a time when results for children living with HIV still lag behind. Washington is clearly signaling that EGPAF’s fight must be different now: even more deeply local, highly efficient, and aggressively pursuing sustainable impact over time.  Dr. Macharia will have the tremendous value of EGPAF’s talented global and local teams as she takes the vision of Elizabeth Glaser into the coming decades.”

Dr. Macharia has over 25 years of experience managing, designing, and scaling international health programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. A medical doctor, she specializes in innovative health solutions, cross-sectoral collaboration, and program sustainability in areas including HIV, maternal and child health, and infectious diseases. Dr. Macharia most recently served as Senior Vice President of Global Programs for Orbis International, leading their portfolio of in-country programming, including monitoring, evaluation and learning, and quality assurance. Before joining Orbis, she was FHI 360’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa – managing HIV prevention, care, and treatment programs across nine African countries and overseeing a portfolio of health and other development programs across 17 countries.

“EGPAF is fortunate to have secured an exciting new leader to take over the great work of former president Chip Lyons and the amazing EGPAF team around the world,” said Karl Hofmann, CEO of HealthX Partners, EGPAF’s parent company.  “Doris Macharia knows our sector, knows our partners and national health ministries, and understands the challenges of leading a complex, multicultural institution.  She will build on the inspiring work started so many years ago, with a humble but passionate fight to do right by kids facing the threat of HIV.  EGPAF’s unfinished journey is more important than ever, and Doris will bring us closer to the day when no mother, child, or family is devastated by HIV and AIDS.  HealthX Partners is delighted to have Doris Macharia join our leadership team.”
