In Cote d’Ivoire, a New Learning Program Supports Health Professionals
In Côte d’Ivoire, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) recently initiated an innovative distance learning program in partnership with local clinics and the Hopital Géneral of Ayamé (HGA). The program offers health care providers an opportunity to continue their education, with trainings focused on patient retention, heath system strengthening, and human resource programs for community health workers.
To help launch the new program, EGPAF’s capacity-building team organized workshops, recruited specialized consultants, trained team members, and carefully selected training topics related to the Foundation’s current programmatic challenges. HGA also included an independent program tailored to health workers whose specialty is service delivery and capacity building.
I traveled to Ayamé to review the new program and learn about its activities since the launch. During my visit, I was impressed with the progress that had been made, led by some very dedicated team members--the program’s webmaster, Mr. Konan Assouman and Dr. Annie Diokouri, the head of the HIV program. Together, they developed the e-learning course modules that are currently in place. The e-learning website is fully functioning, and includes learning modules on a variety of topics, such as patient retention, HIV care and treatment, management of opportunistic infections, quality improvement, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), biological follow-up, and clinical cases. In addition, the site features a forum that allows participants to ask questions and offer support to all the physicians, nurses, and midwives working within the network. It also includes training sessions for basic Internet skills and first-time users of programs like Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Words, Microsoft Excel.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Dr. Diokouri and Mr. Konan, we are helping clinics throughout the region improve patient care not only for HIV/AIDS but across a myriad of health services. I am honored that I was able to witness this wonderful transformation first-hand.
