Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV
The Foundation supports the rapid expansion of the best available interventions to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, while ensuring the long-term health and survival of HIV-positive pregnant women and mothers and HIV-exposed infants. Supported activities include:
- HIV testing and counseling of pregnant women to ensure timely access to HIV prevention, care, and treatment, and safe delivery services.
- Provision of antiretroviral medicines to HIV-positive women and their infants during and after pregnancy to reduce the risk of mother-to-child HIV transmission.
- HIV testing, counseling, and support of breastfeeding mothers to ensure safe and appropriate infant feeding practices, reduce the risk of postnatal HIV transmission, and ensure child health and survival.
