Mother and Daughter Show the Promise of a Generation Free From HIV

Fortunata Kasege and her daughter Florida are living proof that prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is possible. Originally from Tanzania, Fortunata was living in the United States when she learned she was HIV-positive. Luckily, she had access to medicines that helped her give birth to an HIV-free baby. Earlier today, with the New York City skyline and the United Nations Summit on achieving the Millenium Development Goals as their backdrop, Fortunata and Florida spread the message that we can eliminate pediatric HIV and AIDS around the world.

A Shared Story, Two Decades Apart

Today the Oprah Winfrey Show will revisit an episode it aired in 1987 featuring Mike Sisco, a HIV-positive young man who stirred up controversy in a small West Virginia town by jumping in to a public swimming pool. The town made national news and became the epicenter of an HIV and AIDS discrimination debate following Mike’s swim, and the closure of the public pool. Twenty years after the 1987 episode aired, Foundation Ambassador Caleb Glover experienced a near-identical situation while vacationing with his family in Alabama. Read more after the jump.

In Lesotho, there are villages that are tucked away in the kingdom’s many mountain ranges, sometimes wholly inaccessible by car, truck, or motorbike during the winter or the rainy season. With one of Africa’s highest HIV prevalence rates, Lesotho presents a special challenge of how to reach some of the most remote communities with HIV testing and antiretroviral drugs for mothers, infants, and families.
