Partners & Sponsors

We’re grateful to our partners around the world who are helping us work toward our mission to eliminate pediatric HIV and AIDS.

Abbott Fund

Abbott Fund, which has made fighting HIV/AIDS in the developing world a top philanthropic priority, has been a valued Foundation partner for 18 years, providing more than $2.2 million in funding since 1991. Abbott shares the Foundation’s commitment to expanding care and treatment for HIV-infected children and has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in support to the Foundation’s pediatric programs in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Abbott has underwritten two Foundation-sponsored Capitol Hill briefings and provided support for the Foundation’s AIDS Walk Africa event. The Foundation also partners with Abbott on its Determine Donation Program, delivering HIV test kits to support the national AIDS programs in many of the resource-limited countries where the Foundation works.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Foundation has a longstanding relationship with The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2000, the Foundation was able to vastly expand its international prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV efforts through a multi-million dollar grant from the Gates Foundation. Since then, the Gates Foundation has provided the Foundation with additional grants for PMTCT implementation and operations research, as well as pediatric HIV vaccine research.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Since 2004, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has partnered with the Foundation to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV in developing countries, as well as provide HIV care and treatment to children and families. The program works closely with national and local governments and local partners to provide comprehensive HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. The initial partnership with CDC began as a global agreement called Project HEART (Helping Expand Anti-retroviral Therapy for Children and Families) implemented in five countries: Cote d’Ivoire, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. Through separate bilateral arrangements with CDC in-country, CDC also partners with the Foundation on a program in Kenya. The partnership with CDC has reached more than 341,000 individuals with anti-retroviral therapy and 1.2 million pregnant women with PMTCT services. Since 2004, CDC has provided more than $400 million to support Foundation programs in six countries.

Communications Workers of America

CWA-logo.JPGThe Foundation’s relationship with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) stretches back to the earliest days of the Foundation, when little was known about HIV/AIDS and its effect on children. CWA designated the Foundation as its “charity of choice” in 1990 after Elizabeth Glaser delivered a moving speech at CWA’s national convention, and CWA’s support of the Foundation has remained invaluable ever since. CWA national and local chapters have donated a total of more than $6 million to help support the Foundation’s lifesaving programs and they continue to be one of the Foundation's most generous partners.

Disney

The Walt Disney Company is one of the Foundation’s most valued partners, serving as the title sponsor of the A Time for Heroes Celebrity Picnic from 2006 through 2010. In addition to providing monetary support for the Foundation’s work, Disney also brings its unique magic with reading areas, princess activity castles, pirate ship booths, and a host of Disney stars. Disney brightens the lives of children and families around the world through charitable outreach, community initiatives, and the Disney VoluntEARS program.

George Washington University

In 2007, the Foundation and the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (GW) created the Partnership for Pediatric AIDS and Public Health. The partnership allows GW to provide technical expertise to the Foundation’s global pediatric HIV/AIDS activities, while creating innovative educational opportunities for GW students. Dr. Alan Greenberg, professor and chair of the GW Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, serves as partnership director, providing technical leadership and serving on the Foundation’s senior leadership team. Thanks to the partnership, Dr. Laura Guay was also recruited to serve both as the vice president of research at the Foundation and a research professor at GW. Examples of collaborative projects include hosting a large global expert consultation on operations research relating to pediatric HIV and AIDS, and conducting a comprehensive assessment of the Foundation’s monitoring and evaluation systems.

Jewelers for Children

Jewelers for Children (JFC), the official charity of the jewelry industry, was one of the earliest supporters of the Foundation’s global programs and remains a loyal Foundation partner today. JFC has supported our prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV initiatives in several countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, and India. JFC has also provided crucial funding for other programs, such as the International Leadership Award, helping scientists, researchers, and public health specialists address the challenges of HIV/AIDS in countries severely impacted by the pandemic. JFC has generously contributed more than $6.3 million to the Foundation’s lifesaving programs since 1998.

Johnson & Johnson

Since 2003, Johnson & Johnson has partnered with the Foundation to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV in developing countries. The program improves prevention measures and increases intervention capacities of existing health care facilities that serve pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns. The partnership has contributed to reaching more than 1.4 million pregnant women in hundreds of health care sites, and is currently active in Cameroon, India, Malawi, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. Since 2003, Johnson & Johnson has provided more than $11 million to support Foundation programs in 11 countries.

The U.K. Department for International Development

The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) has generously supported the Foundation’s Family AIDS Initiative (FAI) program in Zimbabwe since 2007. DFID has committed approximately $4 million to the FAI program to strengthen support to the National Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV program. By the end of December 2009, with funding from USAID and DFID, the Foundation’s FAI program was providing direct implementation support to PMTCT sites in 32 districts and 3 major cities (approximately 50 percent of all districts in Zimbabwe). DFID-supported activities include broadening the scope of PMTCT and enhancing the continuum of care for HIV infected families in Zimbabwe.

The United Nations Children's Fund

The Foundation and UNICEF share a commitment to eliminating pediatric HIV around the world, collaborating to launch and support global health initiatives that provide HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. UNICEF currently supports Foundation programs in Lesotho, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, and works closely with the Foundation on a variety of global technical activities, including an international consultation meeting on operations research, the “mother baby pack” packaging of PMTCT products, and technical missions to evaluate national PMTCT and pediatric HIV programs throughout Africa.

The U.S. Agency for International Development

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has partnered with the Foundation since 2002 to provide HIV prevention, care, and treatment services to children and families in developing countries. The first USAID cooperative agreement with the Foundation was for the global Call to Action project, with a ceiling of $100 million to support prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services in 12 countries. This flagship project was extended twice and is scheduled to close in September 2010. Beyond the global project, USAID has also awarded bilateral agreements to the Foundation for HIV/AIDS work in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Lesotho, with a total ceiling value of more than $90 million. The Foundation also receives USAID funds as a partner to other organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. As a partner on the PATH AIDSTAR consortium, the Foundation is also eligible for potential task order awards from USAID.
